Summary

Keywords Research

There are many ways to find interesting keywords in SEO. The most famous tools to do it are SemRush & Ahrefs. But it's also possible to find keywords using other intelligent means.

Find keywords using Ahrefs

Ask ahrefs about competitors websites

The more efficient strategy, when you are starting from scratch, is to check on which keywords competitors works.

Tap your website into the search field, then click on "organic keywords 2.0". You'll find this page, with a lot of information and possible filters :

You can filter by keywords, for example we can filter on all keywords containing "bet365" :

We can find a lot of keywords related to our usual target :

You can search the keywords with the lowest competition by clicking on "KD"

Then, you can filter for keywords having at least 150 research each month :

Here are the keywords with the lowest competition and a minimum of research

⚠️
It happens that tools don't really understand competition on a keyword. Be careful with the "KD" on ahrefs.
hmm... Let's replace the keyword filter on "bet365" by "bonus" !

Of course you will find a lot of keywords you've already used but maybe you can find some long tail keywords with low competition that can bring business

Two example from this screenshot :

Last Example : Let's try "sign up" as keyword filter

I've taken this example to show you something.

In some of the cases, you will create a long content which one will target a lot of related keywords, like "bonus code" , "promo code" , "sign up offer", etc.

I just want to give you the card to answer easily this common question: "I have some keywords. Should I create 1 content for each one, or one content for all of these ?"

Here is a simple way to know it : Ask Google. Let's take the example of "ladbrokes sign up offer" :

What we can see :

Here is the most complicated case to analyse.

In some cases, you will have :

Here, you have one similarity that is aceodds.

It means that with a powerful website and strong content, you can rank on the both serps.

However, in this case, if you want to try to rank on both SERPs with a website, you can try to create two pages, moreover, I would recommend it. If you decided to do it, just be careful about your content structure and optimization because you can easily create a cannibalization issue. (here is the meaning of cannibalization: https://www.pi-datametrics.com/blog/seo-keyword-cannibalization/#:~:text=SEO Cannibalisation occurs when two,a (strong) landing page.)

You can also use Thruuu, here: https://app.samuelschmitt.com/fr but i don't know why, sometimes it gives the serp in the wrong order.

This tool gives a lot of informations about the SERP of your choice, use it as much as possible !

Keywords Ideas

Let's go back to Ahrefs ! You can find keyword ideas using phrase match :

It will provide you long tail keywords containing the text you've typed. The option "Having same terms" is working similarly, it just doesn't care about the order of the keywords you have set.

Example :

The last option you can use to find keywords is the "search suggestion", ahrefs will give you keywords that might interest you depending on the keyword you've set :

Another way to analyze keywords from competitors

Let's go to the "Content Gap" option in the left menu.

How does it work ? You just have to set your website into the search bar, then add competitors into the first option. You will get a list of keywords that competitors rank for and you don't. You can set up to 10 competitors at the same time.

o

For example, let's check "footballwhispers.com", and set Johnnybet and Aceodds as competitors.

Here is the list of keywords we obtain :

We can check keywords for which ones both of our competitors are ranking, and we don't, with this filter :

Here is the list of all keywords for which footballwhispers does not rank but aceodds and johnnybet do :
💡
You can add filters on keywords, keyword difficulty, search volume, the position of each competitor, etc.
💡
You can also add a filter on the "word count". For example, if you set "5" as minimum words by query, you will obtain long-tail keywords :

You want informative and useful content ? Answer the public

I've set "bet365" into answerthepublic.com, and here are the results :

Let's check the questions

It should need a zoom but you can find a lot of questions you can check in google.

For example you have these questions :

With keywords like these ones, you can, for example, give an answer to "why bet365 is forbidden" in a country, then put a CTA to a legal operator in this country. Low competition keywords that can make some FTDs.

You can check a lot of keywords on this website.

Last tips ! Let's check "why bet365 is illegal in india" on Google :

Click on questions. Each time, it will open a few more.

Hop ! There are a lot of question asked from users. Maybe you will find some interesting query this way. It can also help content managers to find topic ideas.

Part 2 : Website Analysis

In this short but useful section, I'll show you how I make my powerful estimation of a website.

You can apply it everywhere : for acquisitions, White Labels, Backlinks spot, competitors.

Good to know, here is the "backlink Guidelines" we have created few weeks ago :

https://www.notion.so/Backlinks-Guidelines-2fd8636f823b480ab41ea791c3d89f01

here is the excerpt that is interesting for us :

The backlink criteria tier list

Off Site KPIs

Aherfs Domain Rating

Majestic CF/TF

Evolution from updates

How did it evolved from May update

How did it evolved from December update

Rankings Metrics

How much trafic do it have from Google ?

How did it evolve during the last 6 / 12 months?

How much keywords top100 does it have

Outgoing links

How much outgoing links from the whole site ?

Average of outgoing links by page

Best keywords TOP10

How much on its biggest keywords top10 ?

Which is the most KD it ranks for ?

Based on these KPIs, i can :

  1. Decide if a backlink is worth the price
  1. Try to negociate different kind of links, like homepage /menu / category
  1. Give insights on a potential white label
  1. Give insights on a potential acquisition

Let's try it on aceodds.com

First and one of the most important : Domain Rating (DR). This KPI try to match the Pagerank of Google. When you analyze a website, you should always take care of the DR. It increases when the site receives good backlinks.

If one day you are analyzing a specific page of a website, take a look to the UR (Url Rating). It's like the pagerank of the page. It will be higher if the page have a good internal meshing, receive backlinks, etc.

0 - 20 : Poor

20 - 30 : low

30 - 40 : Medium

50 - 65 : Good

65+ : High

This rate depends on the other KPIs.

Aceodds has 500+ Refering domains (RD), and it's a very good thing. Websites with a good ranking always have more than 100 RD (depeding on many factors like SERPs, thematic, etc.)

Let's take a look to the "organic search" section :

here is the amount of positioned keywords into the TOP100 for aceodds.com

We can see that it decreased during the whole year, with an important decrease during the may update. Be careful with that: Sometimes, big websites are deleting content to optimize the SEO of their favorite pages. I don't know if this is the case here, but it's possible.

Let's go to the "organic keywords 2.0" section again !

First of all, remove all "Google news" keywords to stay focus on the seo performance.

How I usually work :

Below, it is the "TOP 10 keywords with highest KD" list
Below, it is the "TOP 10 keywords with highest volume" list

What can we deduce :

These KPI are enough to say : this website is really strong.
